Outdoors? I like to dig a hole about 2' in diameter and a foot deep, loosen all the dirt and remove about 1/2 of it. Fill the hole back up with some compost or composted manure. Chicken or cow, horse manure contains weed seeds. Water it good and let it sit for a couple days, then test the pH. Should be between 6-7. When I'm ready to plant I loosen the soil up again and mix in some Triazicide to kill the cut worms and some blood meal for vegetative nutrition. One the plants are in I mulch them with grass clippings and spray with deer repellent.

If your soil has a lot of clay you can also mix in some sand to help break up the clay.

*know this isint a answer to soil..but what to feed them.*

go organic

get a big barrel..place under your eves for rain water..collect it..eating bananas?, chop the skins up add them to the water, eat eggs? save the shells crush them up add them to the water..stir often..continue to add banana peels and egg shells rain water..feed this to your lady, all the nutrients you need to feed them..and as natural as you can get.
had some nice rhino which was feed this the whole season

I have posted this chart to show the relative values of elements in soil and absorbsion of nutrients by plants.
Also interesting to compare the Human body to those sources.

Looking into absorbsion rates and applicable sources would be the next logical step in discovering exactly what can be done to dramatically increase plant health, vigour and yeild...

Adding Carbon to the soil is excellent for vigour, but unless the plant has all necessary elements available deficientcies will be more pronouced.
Looking at the chart suggest that increasing C would create a N def', so increasing N would be necessary, and so the cycle goes on, increasing N will create another deficientcy... P&K

So, more C means more NPK, meaning more, trace elements in ratio to the time Vs absorbsion rate increase.

moon, I think that lacking a (micro)nutrient would create deficientcies rather than massively stunt growth, anything necessary is available (except traces of iodine&sodium??), only some are not abundant enough for higher yeilds over less time. Increasing availablity of all necessary nutrients will boost growth, incresing some will do too but not as much and the plant will likely have deficiencies.
moon, please look at the chart and you should see which nutrients are not already present within the soil, in high enough quantaties, and then maybe you could post organic solutions to the lack of those elements..?

Elements:
Nitrogen
Potassium

trace:
Sodium
iodine
- it will also be important to know how concentrated the solutions are and the relative doses over time.
dose = 1/15th of nutrient value on chart, mono-weekly. 5 fluid Oz = 1 unit/100% value (dose would be spread over, 3 months, from veg upto final phase.)

5 f oz / 15 = 1(.3fl zo) 100% dose / nutrient value on chart. eg. Potassium .3/ 1.75 = x fl oz dose once a week.
OR
If adding to soil at the start... Don't divide by 15. 8 Oz/nv on chrt as a ratio to 1(100%), over 15 weeks

*moon if you could find organic solutions I will try to do the rest.. Or people could simply buy an organic nute solution...

If someone is not too concerned with organics, then increasing Carbon* and then giving a heavier does of NPK (&micronutes) standard solution will be extremely beneficial, speeding up growth over a shorter time period, giving larger, higher yeilding plants.

*Burnt large fan leaves (ash) removed during the previous harvests are a good source of organic C to add to the soil, or use a little charcoal.

well..bananas and eggs have two of the biggest % in the soil content..calcium and potassium. maybe thats why it turns out alright..with a good original soil base, maybe there was enough of the other already in the soil to sustain its growth..it was a very tall and large lady.
Thanks for posting the chart Widow, I will be looking into other things that can be added from natural bio products to boost the soil content .
I shall post the results that I find.
Thanks again.
