Why?
Is it just for appearance?
Won't the stuff I'm cutting cure into usable substance?

Can someone post a link that shows before and after - I don't want to cut
too much.

Thanks
Tom

Yes, but it will be of a lesser quality.

It's best to make three piles.

a. Large leaves, and very obvoius "get rid of it" trims. Use this for
hash making, oil extraction, or for cooking. It is the smoke of last
resort as-is.

b. Manicure trims. This is pretty good shake. It will be about as
potent as cheap bagweed, but it'll do in a pinch if you are running
low, or a mootcher comes over to "hit and run". Cure and store as you
would your bud.

c. Tightly manicured bud. The more "non-frosted" plant material you
cut, the better the overall smoke will be in the long run (and the
bigger your "b" pile!)

Cure for a minimum of a month. Three months is better.

Also, if you can afford to do it, vacuum seal 10% to 50% of your
harvest (depending on your harvest size, and how much you smoke) and
store it in a very dark, and very cool place (Wine cellar,
refrigerator, basement) for a YEAR. I prefer cool storage to COLD
(below freezing) storage, because at freezing all cell activity STOPS.
With cool storage, it slows down - but continues to cure.

There is debate as to whether or not it gains, loses, or maintains
potentcy after that length of time - but no one argues that the smell
and taste improves greatly. I look at it this way, if it's killer
genetics, it can afford a small drop and still be killer weed.

Heat is the enemy of pot. Two weeks in the fridge will be fine, as
long as you take it out twice a day and open it up to the fresh air
for a few minutes, to allow accumulated gases to escape..

BklynTom, I think a little more is in order.

#1. Fresh plant, and I'll assume we're talking just cut and manicured pot
#has an average of at least 70% water. So green weight trimmed bud will
#shrink by over 7/10's when cured.

#2. Mold grows fastest on dead plant material when its warm and most,
#exactly the environment inside a paper bag in a warm room in most cases.
#But, if you put a single layer in a paper bag, the bag would wick away
#moisture, but if you filled the bag, there would be a ball of moldy pot in
#the middle. Best to stick with little bags.

#3. And for the life of me, I find the instructions of tending the bag
#twice a day for two weeks too tedious and questionable. First, no room in
#my fridge for a bale and I'm not going through all that work for less
#volume. And second, normal room temperature isn't going to change the
#quality of the dope in two weeks or two months, maybe in two years.

#4. You didn't ask about curing pot. But, if you had, here's my two cents
#on it. The best thing would be if you had a space you could string some
#20# mono fish line from wall to wall in a dark room. Then when you trim
#your buds, leaf a central stick about 6" long and hang the sticks on the
#line by a bud or I like paperclips opened up like ornament hangers. It
#could be a closet or even in a box, but the temp should be 75F or less,
#but the lower the temp, the slower the cure. A fan will help if you
#actually harvested the stuff in the rain or something to prevent or stop
#any mold. I would rather smoke microwaved pot than loose a batch to mold,
#so balances must be observed. Finally, to determine doneness, weigh a
#sample of each manicuring session with a good scale that will get you to
#1/10's of a gram or less. Powder scales are pretty good. Use the biggest
#bud ie. the longest curing bud for the sample weighing. Take weights each
#day until you get the same reading two days in a row (in wet weather, the
#weight will even increase a 0.1g or so. Usually, at room temperature and
#providing the ambient humidity isn't high, this pot will be safe to seal
#in a jar, bag or whatever without fear of molding in 7 to 14 days. And its
#mighty tasty, too ;-)

There are lots of ideas on curing, but these work for me and I always
cringe at the thought of someone destroying their harvest in the final
stages of finishing the smoke.
