Hydroponics is crop production with mineral nutrient solutions instead of soil containing silt and clay. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as sand, gravel or rockwool. A variety of techniques exist.

Plant physiology researchers discovered in the 1800s that plants absorb essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant's water supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow with hydroponics, but some will do better than others.

It is also very easy to do; the activity is often undertaken by very young children with such plants as watercress. Hydroponics is also a standard technique in biology research and teaching and a popular hobby. There is little commercial hydroponic crop production because it is a more expensive method than traditional agriculture.

I have to agree with Willy. The article is well written, and I understood it. The author is basically saying that it's grown with water ('hydro') that is made up of nutrients that the plant needs to grow versus growing them in soil. They're saying that in regular growth with soil, the soil holds the nutrients safe until they are needed. The plant absorbs the nutrients through water, and once the plant absorbs those nutrients it has no need for the soil anymore. So, I think that explains it...;)

easies to prmix in a gallon jug or bucket depending upon the size of your system. mix in nutrients (GH Flora trio is the best) and check PH befoe adding. Change weekly and your good to go!!
