View Full Version : Cutting question
Willy Radisson

Hello,
I've been growing a plant from a seed for a long time. However, this plant
became pretty unhealthy, due to poor lighting conditions and unsuitable
fertilizing. So, i made a cutting from that plant, and stuck it in
fertilized water (i used 20/20/20 fertilizer); it has since then developed
nice root and is ready to be put in soil.
I have some questions, cause i want to do it right this time:
- what sorts of fertilizer should i use for every stage of the plant?
- i'm going to buy one of these light bulbs made especially for growing
plants, which i can get for about 12$ a the hardware store.
- what sort of soil should i use? the most fertilized and aired-up one i
imagine...
- i'm also going to buy a timer, to set off the light bulb automatically,
and give the plant the exact amount of light it needs. How many hours of
lighting should i provide the plant with, according to the evolution stage
of the plant?
thanks
Willy Radisson

I'd like to add one more question.
Right now, my cutting is in flowering phase, even though its very small and
has got very little volume (6-8 leaves)
what should i do right now? should i treat it as if it were in the flowering
phase, or as if it were in the vegetative phase, if i want it to grow and
develop into a bigger plant?
thx

What you show above is ok during veg if the soil is running low on
nutrients. Use one with higher P and lower N during flowering. But don't
think fertilizer will make your plant do amazing things. The plant will
only use what it needs. Soil naturally contains nutrients, if the soil has
the nutrients your plant needs and then you go and add more fertilizer to
it, you stand a good chance of poisoning the soil. Use fertilizer
sparingly, and only when it's needed, especially when growing in
containers.

Fluorescent lights made for plants don't work that well for growing
cannabis. If you must use fluorescents, don't use the "Gro-Lite" type, use
standard fluorescents or ones with the highest lumen rating. Look for the
lighting resources from the faq link in my sig.

Cannabis likes a loose, airy, fast draining soil. Don't overdo the
fertilizer.

During veg you can use anywhere from 16 to 24 hours of light per day.
During flowering use only 12 hours of light, and 12 hours of the darkest
dark you can muster.

Treat it as if it were in the vegetative phase. A 24 hour photoperiod will
hasten its return to vegetative growth, but anything 16 hours or more will
work. When it gets to the size you want, then flower it with the usual
flowering photoperiod of 12 hours.

thanks for the fertilizing tip, i've been going nuts on the fertilizer. i'm
going to cut it down radically
exactly how much fertilizer should i use? i've got this blue powder. I've
been adding 1/2 teaspoon of that 20/20/20 in a 3 liters bottle of water,
with which i water my plants.
is this madness?

hey there
i've read quite a few books on these subjects. I can tell you not to buy
the bulb especially for plants. Supposedly, it does not work nearly as well
as other types of lighting. The best of course is a simple halogen bulb
that emits at least 1000 watts. That is what I use and I swear my plants
grow 3 inches a day, some of them.
More important than the fertilizer you use is the quality of the soil you
use. Keep that in mind. Do not try to cut corners here. There is little
to be saved in terms of money and you will stand to lose alot in terms of
the plant's health. You need a high quality soil with excellent drainage,
preferably Miracle Grow soil, or Pro Terra. Any good mix from a good garden
store, or even grocery store should do it. Just don't get the cheap stuff
with all the little white styrafoam things. It won't drain well and you
will get rootrot or stunted growth. Trust me, this much I know is true.
Also, in the future, it is best to use propagation/cutting agents when you
are planning to clip a plant. I use rootone. Or, Jiffy peat pellets work
well too. Just give it a lot of time, light and good water. Often people
think plants are ready to pot before they really are. Probably they are
just overexcited. Lemme know if you have more questions! I have some
experience, a little, and I have read just about all the books. I'd be
happy to answer any questions you might have.
now, maybe you can answer my question. I have a plant that was doing really
well, but then I took too many fan leaves off and it was also attacked by my
dog. It has a good, thick healthy stem with a few branches but no leaves.
is there any hope of saving this plant? Or will it surely die now? I've
never had this happen. please help if you can, I am very attached to this
plant. I"m sure you can understand that. I will post this question in the
general forum just in case anyone else has help to offer. Please help if
you can. :)

i'm sorry, i can't help you, i'm a beginner in all that cultivation
business.
however, i've got another question: my light bulb operates at 120 W, 1600
lumens. it was the one witht the most lumens at the harware store.
considering that i only have one plant, is it enough?
thx
