Dumb noob question about flowering

I'm thinking of starting to grow and I'm curious about one thing. When
a seed catalogue gives a flowering time of say 8 weeks- does this mean
the plant is ready for harvest 8 weeks after the lights are changed to
12/12 OR is it 8 weeks after flowering commences?

It should be noted these are just estimated,"expect to harvest in....."
figures.
You will still have to observe your plants and when they are ready ,they are
ready.I might be a week or so later,it might be a week or so sooner due to
the growing conditions,light intensity etc.There are far too many variables
involved to say "it will be ready in exactly x-weeks".
These times are usually based on optimum conditions but are still a good
enough inicator to say if x strain is quicker than y strain.
