Hypothetically speaking, if one were to set up their own simple
hydrophonic system to supply themselves only, they might have a few
questions. Say one wanted 2-3 plants and were planning to keep this
cheap, they might use some water bottles filled with the medium and a
4-way fish tank pump to supply air.
They might also plan on buying a wardrobe/chest or something to put
them in and use Florecsent lighting as they are cheap to buy/run and
don't give off much heat. The box could be about 1m cubed.
Lighting:
1) Lighting: How many 90cm flourescent tubes would one use and where
would be the best place to put them (e.g. one on the top and two
lateral)? Also should one go for white, bluish or redish lights or a
combination? Also what's good to use to seal something like a wardrobe
against light getting in, but still allow it to be opened?
2) Smell: Would this likely get very stinky? If so, what could one do
about it? They could just open the window in the room but they might
be on the ground floor of a main street so it would likely stink up
the street. They might also wonder if this would make the room too
cold.
3) Sound: If this set up happened to be in one's bedroom, one might be
concerned about the noise of the pumps, if one were trying to sleep in
the same room. An idea might be to block the ends of the tubes and
make little holes instead to keep the bubbles smaller and less noisy.
One might wonder if there could be any other idea on dealing with
this?
